Micro-Optics Design

In addition to our fused-fiber FBT Couplers and Splitters, DiCon makes use of our capabilities in micro-optics design to offer two families of opto-mechanical switches:

Prism Optical Switches
DiCon’s line of Prism Switches make use of small optical prisms to modify the path of light passing through the switch, as shown below:

VX Stepper Motor Optical Switches
DiCon’s VX-Switch product line makes use of a moving-fiber, moving-collimator design, incorporating a radial stepper motor as the switch actuation mechanism.

In this design, one or two input fibers are mounted to a moving arm, which allows them to be stepped past a curvilinear array of output fibers. The VX-Switch is available in 1xN and 2xN configurations, with a maximum fanout of 120. The VXSwitch is available in three housing sizes, with maximum fanout dimensions of 15, 32, and 120. It supports both single-mode and multi-mode applications. The VX-Switch is particularly well-suited for large-fanout applications that use multimode fiber. It is also a good choice for large-fanout applications where minimum insertion loss and high repeatability are the primary requirements, but where switching time, size, and weight are not that critical.
